When children need reassurance where do they turn? To Mom of course. When I wanted to know the best way to reassure my own family during these uncertain times, I turned to other Christian moms asking them to share ways they keep their families encouraged. Here is what they said:
1. Educate Your Children
“And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.” Deuteronomy 6 : 7 Our children receive their first education at home where Christian moms are master teachers in their family. In times of uncertainty, it is even more important for parents to be prepared to educate their children in many ways. Christian Moms are able to speak from their heads and from their hearts.
Most Moms do not begin the day with a curriculum. Instead, they are aware when a teachable moment presents itself. In these moments they take time to urge and remind children of the family standards for health and personal care. These homegrown standards often exceed those set by the World Health Organization. For instance, washing your hands is good but those clean hands are not enough when it comes to eating from the family-sized chip bag. Instead, those clean hands are used to pour out one serving of chips from the bag because that is how you share in a mindful manner. Little masks are ordered for each child in the house. Time is taken to find the masks designed with each child’s favorite characters or their favorite color. The children have no thought of harm or worry. It is just one more fun thing Mom does. Instead, Moms remind them how good God is and how he guides and protects them each day.
2. Pray With Your Children
“Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” Hebrews 4: 16
A Christian Mom is a praying mom who looks above for wisdom and guidance. She has an unshakeable faith that leads her to the throne of God without hesitation. A godly woman lifts up her family in prayer. She prayers for her country and every world leader. But she is not motivated by fear. Instead, it is a perfect love that guides her to kneel in prayer each day. Her children know God too. Those little hands form a teepee, heads are bowed and those little eyes close. They know God and are known by Him too. Expressions of gratitude are spoken and, in those prayers, those little minds find assurance of God’s love and goodness. And, of course, blessings are requested for family, friends and pets too.
3. Comfort Your Children
“Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort.” 2 Corinthians 1: 3
Moms are earthly manifestations of God’s love as they comfort their children in words and action. The love of Mom is expressed daily. “I love you” are three words that mean the most when Mama says them. In addition, when the violent visions on TV create confusion and concern a little snuggle with mom is like healing medicine.
Mom’s are in an incredible place to hold meaningful conversations with their children. These conversations can help children imagine more promising days ahead. It is important that they are able to envision a day in the future when justice and equality are the norm. In response, Moms affirm their visions and retell accounts of giants of faith who overcame obstacles with great personal fortitude.
4. Speak Openly to Your Truth
“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22: 6
What sets Christian Mothers a part is their ability to use the word of God to pass along wisdom and enduring truths to their children. They sit down with their children to teach them about people in an age-appropriate manner. In a true to life manner, the Bible captures us as people at our best and worse. With these lessons, children grow in wisdom and understanding.
Ultimately, Christian Moms resist the urge to shelter their children from truth. Instead, they consider their child’s maturity and how they learn. Then they thoughtfully frame their words in a manner that matches their child’s style of learning. As a result, children are able to understand it and remember it for years to come.
All women care for their children but godly women bestow amazing blessings on their families. Moms provide love, assurance, wisdom and comfort to their families. They are intimately invested in heavenly treasures and reap the rewards of their faith. Faithful Mothers bless their family and, as a result, become a great example to many who witness and benefit from her love and care.
